Week ending 09.03.18
Week ending 02.2.18
In Year 1 we have been working hard on our numbers to 50. We have been learning about place value and how 2-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones. We have also been learning to count to 50, forwards and backwards, and from different starting numbers. We have even made up actions to do when we count to help us remember the numbers.
In Creative Learning we have been looking at Rio de Vida – a topic all about Brazil. So far we have used maps and atlases to locate and name each of the continents, as well as to try and understand the difference between continents and countries. We have learned about where Brazil is located, which oceans surround it and we have even learned some of the human and physical features of Brazil (using what we had already learned from our Knowledge Organiser).
In English we have started to look at poetry. We have looked at what syllables are and how we can count them in different words and lines of a poem. We have also been looking at describing things using our senses so that we can write our own senses poems next week.
Week ending 19.01.18
During our first week back after Christmas we enjoyed learning about the Hindu light festival of Diwali. We began by learning about different types of light and then read and retold the story of Rama and Sita. We also looked at the location of India, life in India and found out about what Hinduism is and some of the symbols associated with Hinduism. For Art, we developed our painting skills when creating our own Rangoli patterns. We learned what the primary and secondary colours are and chose when to use thick and thin brushes to paint our patterns.
This week we have had a visit from our class governor, Mrs Haydock. Mrs Haydock was very impressed with our effort and learning in Maths; we were balancing equations to show our understanding of the ‘=’ sign. We have learned lots of calculation strategies for addition and subtraction and are getting very good at using these independently.
In English we have been leaning all about diary writing. We have read Diary of a Wombat and Dougal’s Deep-sea Diary and have worked really hard to learn about when to use ‘ed’ endings for past tense verbs.
Week ending 1st December 2017
This week the children had a fantastic time at the Theatre Royal watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and we particularly enjoyed the 3D effects. Also, we have been working really hard on learning about our Year 1 focus author, Mini Grey. We have read books from the Traction Man series, identified the style of the author’s writing and tried to mirror her style in our own writing. We have also been learning about the nativity story in our R.E. lessons. We have been thinking carefully about the gift of Jesus and how this gift shows God’s love and care for the world.
Week ending 3rd November 2017
Week ending 20th October 2017
Week ending 6th October 2017
Week ending 22nd September 2017
Week ending 8th September 2017
This week the children have settled in well to their learning in Year 1. We have been working hard on our handwriting and have practiced lots of our letters. We have also been using our counting skills to understand numbers up to 10. Now that we are in Year 1, we have been spending our free time completing challenges in the provision areas. When we do this we can earn and collect different coloured lollipop sticks to show the range of challenges that we have completed during the week, including construction, creative, reading, writing and maths challenges.
Week ending 30th June 2017
Over the past 2 weeks we have been reading and learning about fables. We are beginning to understand the morals of these types of stories. In Maths we have been working hard on measures, including length, weight, capacity and time.
In PE we have been practicing our skills ready for Sports Day. We have enjoyed lots of the activities that we have completed, such as running, throwing and catching and jumping.
Week ending 16th June 2017
Our first week back after half term was Science Week. During this week we did lots of learning in class about Albert Einstein. We also attended a Science Jobs Fair in the hall and had lots of fun finding out about all of the different science related jobs. On Friday we got to dress up as mad scientists and completed a range of fun science investigations in different classrooms.
Year 1 have also been lucky enough to take part in a DT with Steph O’Donnell. On this day we all designed and made a moving vehicle that linked with our topic, Bright Lights, Big City. We then spent some time in class painting our projects and evaluating our success.

To begin our new topic, The Enchanted Woodland, we explored the school woodland area for evidence of fairies. The children were very excited to discover a small, wooden fairy house, a post box, lampposts, and even a wheel barrow. A few of the children even saw some fairies whilst we were creeping about on our tip-toes so as not to disturb them!
In Maths, we have been trying hard to work out missing number sequences that count on in 2s, 5s and 10s. Although some of us found this a little bit tricky to begin with, we have worked hard and are now getting really good at knowing the number that comes next.
In English, we have been reading the story, Good Little Wolf, and the children have engaged well with the characters in the story. They had an excellent knowledge of the big, bad wolf from other stories they have read and loved the comparison with Rolf (the good little wolf) in this story.
Week ending 17th March 2017
Last week Year 1 and 2 went on a school trip to the Story Barn in Liverpool. We had a fantastic time exploring inside the story barn and using the props and costumes to retell some of our favourite stories. We also enjoyed the craft activities and the walk through Calderstones Park to see the ancient Allerton Oak tree that is estimated to be 1000 years old.
Over the past two weeks we have been developing our DT skills by designing, making and evaluating a zoo enclosure for our topic, Paws, Claws and Whiskers. We worked in teams of 6 or 7 to use junk modelling, cutting, sticking and painting to create our enclosures.
This week we have also been learning about Fairtrade as park of Fairtrade fortnight. We have used Fairtrade products to make cakes for our school cake sale to raise money for Fairtrade
Week ending 3rd March 2017
In English this week we have been looking at character descriptions in the book Do Not Enter The Monster Zoo. We have been trying hard to use adjectives that don’t just describe colour and size. We worked in groups to plan some ideas before we began our writing.
We have also celebrated Mardi Gras with our dressing up day. Throughout the day we learned about where France is and some of the traditional celebrations in Paris. We made carnival hats to wear to the school parade and ate some crepes with different French toppings.

Last week Year 1 enjoyed the whole-school reading morning. The children talked about how much they had enjoyed having their parents, grandparents, aunties and siblings to read with them in our learning environment; the children especially liked learning new facts about Brazil through reading some non-fiction books with their families.
In RE, the children have been learning about what makes a special friend and who Jesus’ special friends were. The children have been keen and enthusiastic when looking at the Christian values and using these to decide how they and others can be good friends to other people.
During our Science learning we have been predicting and investigating which materials would make the best carnival outfit, in terms of being waterproof, lightweight or flexible. The children have looked at a wide range of materials and are looking forward to conducting their investigations next week.
Week ending 13th January 2017
Year 1 have settled back in to their learning well after Christmas and have been working hard across all areas of the curriculum. Our new topic for this half term is ‘Rio de Vida’, which will focus our learning around Brazil. The children have already explored some Samba music and investigated the different sounds they could make using a range of instruments. In English we have been reading Aladdin and the children have particularly enjoyed completing the challenges in the continuous provision areas that related to this story. We also enjoyed our trip to the pantomime to watch Aladdin; the children talked about how they had enjoyed being involved in responding to the funny and bad characters in the story. In Maths we have been learning lots about money; we have learned the value of different coins and notes and have even been able to work out how much money in total and how much change we could get from different amounts.
