After a busy half term holidays, Year 2 returned to school to celebrate and enjoy our Science Week. We studied the life of Isaac Newton in English and created our own fact files using information about him. We enjoyed visitors coming into school to talk to us about their Science related professions and we had lots of fun on Mad Science Day as we explored lots of different investigations, experiments and fun science activities.
Week ending 26th May 2017
After completing our end of KS1 SATs assessments over the last couple of week, Year 2 have participated in lots of fun and exciting learning and challenges.
We have become print designers as we have experimented with different shapes and created out own repeated pattern print. We have also had fun investigating the best conditions for cress to grow in.
At the end of the week, we have participated in lots of organised activities which have developed our understanding and awareness of health, exercise and well-being.
Week ending 12th May 2017
We promised to remind you about how our plants were growing…. so here we are.
We have been watering our plants each day, making sure they get plenty of sunlight and warmth and look how they have started to grow.
We have also written non-chronological reports to give information about plants. We carried out some research using the iPads and non-fiction books in our classroom and then used the information that we discovered to make notes to use in our reports.
Week ending 28th April 2017
In Year 2, we are learning about plants and how they grow. To find out more about this, we have planted our own runner beans which we are observing each week to see how they have changed. This week we have also written instructions on how to plant a runner bean seed so that other children could do the same and enjoy growing things themselves.
We will let you know how well out runner bean plants grow so watch this space!
Week ending 17th March 2017
Year 2 have had a very busy couple of weeks full of trips, baking and exciting learning.
We really enjoyed our trip to the Story Barn last week. We shared lots of lovely stories and had lots of fun using our imaginations as we explored different areas of the huge park.
This week we have been thinking about Fairtrade. We have learnt about the Fairtrade organisation and understood the work that they do to help farmers in less fortunate areas of the world to make sure that they are treated fairly and get what they deserve. To help them we made some cakes to sell at our school cake sale. They were very popular and we really enjoyed making them for such a good cause.
Over the last few weeks we have been learning abut fable stories in our English lessons. We now understand that they are stories that have a moral. This has been helping us as we think about our own and other people’s actions and behaviours. Now that we have become very confident with fables, during the next weeks we will be starting to plan and write our own.
Week ending 3rd March 2017
What a fun week we have had in Year 2 celebrating Mardi Gras and World Book Day.
On Tuesday we came into school wearing our favourite character costumes or dressed in French colours. We enjoyed learning French numbers in the morning, before we started to learn about Paris and the Mardi Gras carnival that happens there. We used similes, which we have been learning about in English, to describe the carnival colours and sounds. We also made Eiffel tower models from pipe cleaners and displayed these on hats for our costume parade.
On World Book Day we talked a lot about our favourite books and authors and shared some lovely stories together. We also made bookmarks to use when we are reading at home.
Week ending 10th February 2017
We have been having lots of fun within Design Technology this week as the children in Year 2 have been exploring how to make structures stronger, stiffer and more stable. They have been set challenges, such as building bridges from spaghetti and marshmallows and building the tallest free-standing tower from newspaper. Although this proved a little tricky for some, the children worked well as a team with their class buddies to do their best.
In Maths we have been starting to learn how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. This has difficult work, however using hand-held analogue clock faces so that the children could move the hands themselves has helped.
In English, we have been reading the story ‘The Tunnel’ by Antony Browne. The children have enjoyed completing lots of drama activities on this story, such as hot seating as the character of Jack, walking through a conscious alley as Rose in her dilemma and imagining what it would be like to crawl through a tunnel. This has all helped us do some wonderful descriptive writing and writing in role as a character.
Also this week, we have been learning a song in sign language for our Sign2Sing charity event. We have really enjoyed it and become very good.
Week ending 27th January 2017
The children have had a very busy few weeks developing their Maths and English knowledge.
In Maths, we have learnt about units of measure that are used to measure length, height and weight as well as starting to read scales on rulers. We have then moved onto money where the children have been recognising different coins to then combine them and make totals.
In English, we have read the story of Rapunzel. Because we enjoyed the story so much, we decided to write a different version of it. We thought about what if Rapunzel was rescued from the tower in a different way. This would be big news and therefore we wrote newspaper reports about it.
Week ending 13th January 2017
The children have all settled back into Year 2 well after a lovely Christmas break.
We have started out new topic which is called Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. Already, we have learnt the names of different parts of a castle and the importance of them in keeping the castle secure. We have also created some drawings of castles on the IPads using an app called Doodle buddy. Can you see the different features in our drawings?
Week ending 4th November 2016
All of the children have settled back into school after the October holidays very well. We have started learning about our new topic which is called ‘Street Detectives.’ Within this topic, we will be finding out about our local area in terms of its geographical features and historical changes. Very soon, we will be inivitng some of our grandparents to come into school to help us with our discoveries and learning.
We have also started to read The Jolly Postman story this week. We have looked at all of the different houses in the story and decided which fairytale characters we think would live in each house by describing them. We then looked at the Jolly Postman himself and wrote some questions that we would like to ask him. We had lots of fun when some children pretended to be the Jolly Postman to answer our questions.
In Maths, we have been looking at some tricky multiplication and division work, which we will be continuing with over the next few weeks.
Week ending 14th October 2016
After making our clay pirate ships, we investigated different materials to see whether they would float or sink. We found that clay would not be the best material to sail the seas in, and instead that plastic would be. We have been working hard in English to find out about Captain Blackbeard and write diary entries and messages in a bottle in role. We will be using the information that we have found to write a report on Captain Blackbeard next week. Year 2 have been developing their knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction strategies which they have been using well to solve problems. We are looking forward to our trip to Underwater Street in Liverpool next week where we will be having lots of fun completing some exciting pirate activities.
Week ending 30th September 2016
The children in year 2 have been busy studying maps of the world to locate different countries that are above and below the equator. They have decided on the routes that they would take if they were to sail to these countries and which oceans and seas they would need to cross.
But what will they sail in? Well, year 2 have that covered as we have designed and made our own model pirate ships from clay (pictured below.) They are complete with a well stocked hull, masts, sails, crows nests and even a plank. During the forthcoming week, we will be carrying out some tests to see if our clay pirate ships are the most reliable to travel in… or should we have used a different material? We will inform you of our findings.
Week ending 16th September 2016
Year 2 have been enjoying exploring their new classroom and getting to know the rules and routines of year 2.
In Maths, the children have been looking at the value of each digit in two-digit numbers.
In English, the children have been pretending to be cabin boys and girls on board a pirate ship to write a diary entry.
They have also begun to find out a little more about our pirate topic by learning the names of the main parts of a pirate ship and the 5 oceans of the world.
Week ending 10th June 2016
During our first week back, Year 2 have been busy starting our new topic of Pirates. The children have all shown fantastic enthusiasm at home by making some wonderful pirate ships using lots of different recyclable materials.
We have been using our pirate theme in Maths as well as we have learnt about sorting objects into categories and making and interpreting pictograms.
Week ending 20th May 2016
This week Year 2 have been working very hard to complete their SATS assessments. They have shown us what amazing and resilient individuals they are and have worked with great perseverance and effort. Everyone in School is so very proud of each and everyone of them.
We have also had fun this week when we have designed, made and evaluated our own model houses. We learned about different types of houses, investigated a variety of materials we could use and howto join them and then completed our final design. We think our houses are great!! Don’t you agree??
